Asian Handicap removes the possibility of a draw and gives one team a “head start” or “handicap” so the bet becomes more balanced.
That’s it. Everything else is just variations of how big that head start is.
In football, favourites win more often. Bookmakers use Asian Handicap to:
The core idea
You’re not betting on the match result. You’re betting on the result after the handicap is applied.
Think of it like this:
One team starts the match with imaginary goals added or removed.
Below is the simplest possible breakdown of every type.
1️⃣ Whole‑goal handicaps (−1, +1, −2, +2)
Example: Team A −1
Team A starts the match minus one goal.
Example: Team B +1
Team B starts plus one goal.
2️⃣ Half‑goal handicaps (−0.5, +0.5, −1.5, +1.5)
These cannot end in a draw → no refunds.
Example: Team A −0.5
Team A must win the match. Anything else = loss.
Example: Team B +1.5
Team B can:
Lose by 2+ = loss.
3️⃣ Quarter‑goal handicaps (−0.25, +0.25, −0.75, +0.75)
This is where people get confused — but it’s actually simple.
A quarter handicap is just two bets in one.
Example: Team A −0.25
This is the same as betting:
So:
Example: Team B +0.75
This is the same as:
So:
Handicap | What it means | What you need |
0 | No handicap | Your team must win (draw = refund) |
−0.5 | Your team starts half a goal behind | Must win |
+0.5 | Your team starts half a goal ahead | Win or draw |
−1 | Your team starts 1 goal behind | Win by 2+ (1 = refund) |
+1 | Your team starts 1 goal ahead | Win/draw (lose by 1 = refund) |
−0.25 | Split: 0 and −0.5 | Win = win, draw = half loss |
+0.25 | Split: 0 and +0.5 | Win/draw = win, draw = half win |
−0.75 | Split: −0.5 and −1 | Win by 2+ = win, win by 1 = half win |
+0.75 | Split: +0.5 and +1 | Win/draw = win, lose by 1 = half loss |
Imagine you’re giving a weaker team a head start or making a stronger team prove their dominance.
That’s all Asian Handicap is.
